John Mayer Covers MJ’s “Human Nature”

7 Jul

Earlier today during Michael Jackson’s memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA musician John Mayer covered Jackson’s song “Human Nature” off of the 1982 Thriller album.

I was watching as the event was broadcast live on television and sat in amazement during this performance.  Mayer chose not to sing any vocals during this performance, so aside from some back up singing during the choruses the song is more of a musical piece.  I think it truly says a lot about the respect Mayer has for Jackson that he didn’t try to make “Human Nature” anything more than it already is.  My opinion (as a very big fan of Michael’s work) is that “Human Nature” has always had one of the most touching melodies in modern music.  I like that John stayed away from flashier riffs and solos and decided to leave the song as it was, sans a slight Mayer layer.  I love me some Mayer layers.

BTW, it’s my 22nd birthday.  Hollerpham.

Perez Hilton vs. will.I.am

22 Jun

So if you haven’t heard or read on Twitter yet, last night at an after party for the Much Music Video Awards in Toronto, Canada gossip blogger Mario “Perez Hilton” Lavandeira and Will “will.I.am” Adams got into fisticuffs at hot spot Ultra.  Of course both sides of the story are completely different but here is what I have gathered from both sides statements:

  1. Perez Hilton doesn’t like the new Black Eyed Peas CD so save your money and use a torrent.
  2. Don’t disrespect will.I.am or the Black Eyed Peas or else they break-a-your-face.
  3. Fergie would rather approach you in a public place to work out private matters than text or have lunch.
  4. These people have nothing better to do than give each other awards, party, party again after that & then fight.
  5. Neither of these people are famous enough for my mother to know what I am talking about right now.
  6. Nevermind, my mom just recalled that Perez is that “trollish gay guy with the weird hair.”
  7. My mom forgot he also has an obnoxiously shaped head.

But seriously, the story goes that in Toronto at an after party for the MMAs Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas approached gossip blogger Perez Hilton and simply asked “Hey, do you have a problem with me?” (See will.I.am’s DIPDIVE video for the best Fergie impression ever).

Perez responds with the less than appropriate and far from friendly,”No, I just don’t like your record.”  According to will.I.am (and from what I remember, Perez himself) Fergie and Perez are friends.  How you can be friends with the guy that says you look like Brett Michaels is beyond me – but hey, different strokes.  I guess this display of blatant honesty offends miss Fergie.  At this point I just want to say, if Fergie was so offended and hurt by a simple opinion maybe she should rethink a profession that is basically built on the validation from millions of strangers.  I digress.

An image from PerezHilton.com comparing Fergie (L) to Brett Michaels.  Rough.

From there the stories split into two versions.  According to Perez Hilton, he states in a video that at another club (because what’s an awards show without an after-after party?) will.I.am comes over to Perez and rudely tells him to stop being mean to the BEP on PerezHilton.com.  My guess is this arrangement still allows for Perez to be mean to the BEP in the privacy of his own home, just not on PH.com.  According to will.I.am he approached Perez and asked him to refrain from being “blatantly rude” to the BEPs.  He then goes over how it’s okay to have an opinion but not a rude one.  He asks Perez not to disrespect him and Perez responds with a snippy “I respect you!”  Based on will.I.am’s impression of Perez saying “I respect you,” I believe Will’s side of the story.  His impression is just too dead on.

After this altercation will.I.am leaves Perez and continues enjoying his after-after party.  Later in the night Perez finds will.I.am outside of Ultra and says “You know, it was pretty gay of you to come at me like that.”  According to Perez’s statement video on his website, Perez admits to calling will.I.am insensitive slurs such as “fag”, “faggot”, “homo” and saying variations of “You’re gay.”  Perez even goes so far as to say he knew before he said those slurs that those are the words he thought would provoke and set off will.I.am the most.

While it is still unclear who threw what body part into what homo, it is clear that Perez Hilton got knocked around.  I don’t think I need to go into too much detail to convey that we all know Perez loves his drama.  In his statement video you can see a mark under his eye, however it isn’t that bad, especially since the video was made the morning after the event and blood vessels around the eyes break easily – hence they bruise much more easily than other body parts.  Perez says he was bleeding, wondering if perhaps his eye was knocked out. He then performed two acts of Shakespeare’s Hamlet because he didn’t want to be typecast as the guy that “can only act like the gay friend from Mean Girls.”

Anybody on Twitter last night knows everything that happened as it went down (according to Perez) because while his eye was possibly hanging from a bloody retna in a dirty Toronto nightclub, Perez was tweeting about his assault RATHER THAN CALLING THE AUTHORITIES.  He states he wasn’t sure how badly he was assaulted and that he thought it was a possibility that he lost an eye, all the while tip-tapping away on Twitter about the events happening.

“OMG!  I’ve just been assaulted.  RT @lifealertlady I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.

Since the morning has rolled around a clear line has been drawn into the sand.  On one side is Perez Hilton and every effeminate tween boy that idolizes him.  No word yet if Lady GaGa and Katy Perry have joined the pink side.  Of course on the other side of the line is will.I.am…and pretty much everybody else.

I mean it…everybody…even me.

I’ve spent years reading PerezHilton.com while pretending to work in cubicles.  I’m a member of the LGBT community and I have appreciated things he’s done in the past.  Nobody can deny that if you need to shine some light on a subject, Perez Hilton & his website are definitely the platform to take it to.  However, my love of the Perez has consistently declined.  A big bit ‘o’ beef I had with him was late last/earlier this year during the Prop 8 campaigns.  I completely believe that Prop 8 is unconstitutional, but unfortunately it was put up for a vote and the majority ruled for it, banning gay marriages.  From that point, all anybody who wanted change could do was protest and prepare for the next battle for civil rights.  However, Perez fought hate with hate – to the point where it became obnoxious and even I was turned off from the cause.

will.I.am is fin to get aggro in some plaid, yo.

And now in addition to that faux paus (see Patti Stanger, that’s how you say it!) he’s mixed up in this new controversy which affects the LGBT community as well.  The simple fact that Perez Hilton, an openly gay (and can I just say VERY FLAMBOYANT) man used the words that hurt & put him down to provoke someone else.  Perez used hateful slurs to intentionally try to hurt and shame a man into fighting and/or attacking him.  I do not advocate violence whatsoever, but I can’t help but think Perez got exactly what he was asking for, regardless of who hit him.  It baffles me how Perez didn’t stop and think about the damage his words would do.  Aside from the attack that he was all but literally asking for, he has also given an insurmountable amount of power to words like “fag” and “homo” because not only were they used in a hateful, violent and degrading way; they were used by a man that knows more than anyone else the pain and embarrassment those words cause AND HE STILL USED THEM. To me, a gay man using those words tells every one else it’s okay to use those words.  Unfortunately a night has passed and Perez has made his hateful, MFbomb laden statement video, in which he admits to using these words – and he still doesn’t think it’s wrong!

Perez Hilton wants you to forget he used to look like Mimi Bobeck.

I am so ashamed that Perez Hilton is a member of the LBGT community.  I have never and very likely will never accept him as a positive gay role model.  I further suggest that any and all people and groups stop treating him like a public figure that has an opinion that matters.  It was bad enough to see him on CNN talking about Prop 8 (and you wonder why it passed), let’s not further empower his words by acting like they have meaning.  I understand gossip is an entertainment industry standard, but what would the world really be missing if there were no more PerezHilton.com?

Yeah, I couldn’t think of anything either.

Last Night…

Last night was a lot to process.  Waking up this morning with the night still on my mind compelled me to record this video.

I hope it’s gonna make you notice.

I’ve Been Ommitting Things

6 Dec

…from this blog, so lets take a little walk down memory lane…

“Gimme Sunshine” [Ryan Adams]

I recorded this as what may have been the first homage for Lisen.  I had heard the song online that day and completely fallen in love with it, much like how I was feeling towards Lisen at the time, so I smushed the two loves together and learned/recorded the song for her.  She said she loved it a lot, but we all know how little that means in retrospect.  That last comment sounded much more bitter than I actually am, I just really don’t feel like deleting and thinking of how to rephrase.

“Puzzle/Align” [Kacey Cash]

This was an original song I had made up about 95% on the spot – while the camera was recording.  I wish I remembered how to play this.  I’m sure if I took the time to sit down at the keys with the recording going I could figure it out – and maybe I will.  Anyway, the audio isn’t that great singing wise because it was around 6:45-7am and people were sleeping, so I very well couldn’t be wailing like Bob Marley or the Wailers.

“Cath…” [Death Cab for Cutie]

This song was so amazing for me to hear the first time.  I was in my car coming home from work at dawn’s crack in the morning and this song came on my iPod (on shuffle).  I had downloaded “Narrow Stairs” with about 8 other albums, and had yet to really give it the attention a DCFC album deserves, but when this song came on everything else took a backseat (haha it’s funny because I told you this is all happening in my car).  The lyrics spoke to me, a story of a woman with someone well enough intentioned – but not as right for her as the protagonist singing the song.  To me it became a song for the helpless – for people that know what’s right but are morally/ethically bound by “doing the right thing,” i.e. staying out of your ex’s business while he/she makes their own mistakes. I really love how at the end of the song it comes full circle to  say (paraphrasing) that if most people (including the singer) were in the same position, they would have most likely acted the same way. While I don’t necessarily find that true in all cases, I could see where a 19 year old version of me would’ve gone running straight into the easiest pair of arms available (and I mean easy like – it’s easy to be in a less responsibility-laden relationship, not easy like a ho).

“I Will Follow You Into the Dark” [Death Cab for Cutie]

I recorded this song one day before I met Lisen, and I recorded it for my ex Brittany to see.  I guess when you think about the fact that I was making videos for my ex up until a day before I met Lisen, it looks a little bad on my part to even join into a relationship with someone.  I’ve found over time that while I don’t really consider being with Brittany again, I project a lot of our past relationship onto new girls.  I want every girl I date to remind me of Brittany – because let’s face it, your first love is always your most intense love (in good and bad ways), but what the two of us had was amazingly awesome and I want every meaningless date in between her and the next love of my life to at least be as exciting as the past.

Either way, this song is the quintessential “I’ll love you forever, no matter what” song because the lyrics plainly say “If you die, I’ll be right behind you – because basically loving you is all I’m here for.”  Awww.

and finally…

“Where I Stood” [Missy Higgins]

I have no idea why the hell that black spot only sticks on my face, or why I look like Grimace by the end of the clip, but you’re watching for the audio more than the video…I’m not that interesting to watch (in other words I’m no John Mayer).

And that concludes the little video update/walk down recent memory lane.  There are more videos coming soon (Monday/Tuesday?) so stick around.  They are always available at www.youtube.com/kaceycash and eventually the “better” ones end up here.
