Earlier today during Michael Jackson’s memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA musician John Mayer covered Jackson’s song “Human Nature” off of the 1982 Thriller album.
I was watching as the event was broadcast live on television and sat in amazement during this performance. Mayer chose not to sing any vocals during this performance, so aside from some back up singing during the choruses the song is more of a musical piece. I think it truly says a lot about the respect Mayer has for Jackson that he didn’t try to make “Human Nature” anything more than it already is. My opinion (as a very big fan of Michael’s work) is that “Human Nature” has always had one of the most touching melodies in modern music. I like that John stayed away from flashier riffs and solos and decided to leave the song as it was, sans a slight Mayer layer. I love me some Mayer layers.
BTW, it’s my 22nd birthday. Hollerpham.
